After a VERY delayed offseason and a very delayed search for a third
baseman with a power bat, the Twins signed up Joe Crede to a one year
deal worth 2.5 million guaranteed and an extra 4.5 million in
incentives on Friday. The deal was originally reported by SI.com's Jon Heyman.

Well,
a long search for a corner man with power and a great glove is finally
over. Crede is a Twin, after an offseason that made it seem the Twins
would never touch Crede. The move is a very effective deal,
considering you get a potential 30 homer guy for a maximum 7 million
dollar deal for one year. Crede brings power and a vacuum for a glove
at 3B, a balance that the previous Twins plan never could have brought.

Though his back is a topic of substance. Crede has of course
been limited to 144 games the past 2 seasons because of it and is the
vertebrae (get it?) for the incentives. The cash bonuses kick in once
Crede reaches 250 AB, and end when he gets to 550. Though many are
weary of his back problems considering the Boras client had a 2nd
corrective surgery this offseason. So obviously the cash flush Twins
came away with a huge steal here, if Crede's at the top of his game,
you get a max potential 7 million dollar to hit 5th or 7th in the Twins
lineup.

Though, the 2 guys that maybe have to compete for a
roster spot are the Twins previous players at the 3B position: Brendan
Harris and Brian Buscher. They might find themselves vying for a spot
on the 25 man along with Matt Tolbert, but with a possible Cruz signing
(more on that later) the Twins could find it hard to meet all of their
talented INF's demands with a flushed bullpen and pitching staff. Add
this on to another roster competition, the Twins have a great and
exciting start to a surely memorable and perhaps World Series season.

Cruz Control
According to Bob McManaman of azcentral.com, the Twins and Diamondbacks could be on the verge of striking a sign and trade deal with type A free agent reliever Juan Cruz
who has a very impressive 10 K per 9 innings for his career. The Twins
and D-Backs have been chatting for about a week now about a move that
could land the D-Backs a Twins player and give the Twins a fireballing
setup man while maintaining their first round pick in the coming draft
this June. If the Twins could hammer out a deal with Cruz, they would
not only have their infield problem secure, but a lockdown setup man
that could be the stairway to one of the best closers in baseball, all
in one weekend. The deal would certainly creat havoc in the bullpen
though, with 2 of the current Twins relievers looking on the inside
from out. Here's to hoping the Twins could lock him up! More updates to
come if any are given.

The Twins have been relatively busy compared to early in the offseason,
as in the past 2 weeks they've agreed with a 2 year deal to Jason Kubel (and possibly keep him in Minnesota for
an extra year with a 2011 option), agreed to terms with arbitration eligible reliever Matt Guerrier, and signed free agent right hander Luis Ayala to bolster the late innings. The latter 2 being in consecutive days. Could they go 3 days in a row?

The Twins
have been linked on and off this past offseason with free agent 3B and
Twin killer Joe Crede, and the rumors have been heating up big time the
past few weeks between the 2 parties. Multiple sources are implying
that the Twins, by default, are the frontrunner mainly because the
several other teams previously linked to Crede have now backed off.

The
debate should be raised though, is Joe Crede really an upgrade over the
2 players expected to share time at the spot this season? Let's compare:

Brian Buscher-
Buscher
has been a very skilled hitter in the minors the past few seasons, as
he was the Twins Minor League Player of the Year in 2007, and hit .319
before being called up to join the Twins in June of 2008. In exactly
300 Major League AB's, Buscher has hit .280 with 6 homers driving in 57
runs with an impressive OBP at .335. The Twins like Buscher a lot, but
he just hasn't seemed to be exactly what they're looking for,
considering his defense isn't good ... at all, and that he doesn't mash
left handed pitching. If the Twins don't acquire Crede, Buscher is
expected to split time with another candidate and platoon against right
handed pitching.

Buscher vs. RHP:
246 AB, 73 H, .297 AVG, 10 2B, 6 HR, 49 RBI, .61 BB-K, .354 OBP, .411 SLG%, .764 OPS, 116 OPS+

His
numbers against right handers have been very impressive as you can see,
almost polar opposites from his splits against left handers. Most of
his success has come in 2008 when he had a great half season with a
.316 average against righties and an OPS .035 points higher than his
career splits. Nonetheless, very solid stats against right handed
pitchers, though with little experience.

Brendan Harris-
Harris
was traded from Tampa Bay to Minnesota in the 2007 offseason in that
blockbuster deal that pretty much fleeced the Twins... In Harris' first
season as a Twin, he struggled a bit. He had many ups and downs in
limited AB's changing positions many times and gaining experience at
every infield spot, including 1B. Harris is of course Buscher's
counterpart, and Harris also has some interesting stats against lefties
AND righties, as well as playing pretty solid defense. Harris, being a
right handed hitter, is expected to take the bulk of duty against
lefties, unless of course Crede is a Twin...

Harris vs. LHP
325 AB, 96 H, .295 AVG, 27 2B, 6 HR, 30 RBI, .48 BB-K, .360 OBP, .440 SLG% .800 OPS, 117 tOPS+

Compared
to right handed pitching, Harris' stats are torn. Against lefties, he
has a great OBP (.360) and a .440 SLG% giving him that solid OPS and
OPS+, which is park adjusted. He hits for a high average, compared to
his career average of .269 and his .258 average against righties. Now,
the problem is, are his power stats really comparable? He hit 16 of his
22 career homers against right handed pitching, though in 415 more
AB's. That equates to 1 HR every 46.25 AB vs. righties. And against lefties, he
has 6 HR in the 325 AB listed above, which gives him about a homer
every 54.2 AB's. That's not an alarming difference, just something to
consider. Perhaps a reason may be a lack of experience against lefties?
Let's hope so, otherwise the Twins power search at 3B won't improve.

Joe Crede-
All
Twins fans should know that Joe is a Twins killer that will likely be
out of the AL Central this season with the quite possible exception,
Minnesota. Let it be known, Crede starts fast and falters, and also
hits for a pretty low average, while striking out a lot and not drawing
very many walks. He does have power and a lot of it, but remember, he's
established himself as a White Sox, and all Twins fans should consider
the Cell and its dimensions.

Joe Crede Career:
2768 AB, 712 H, .257 AVG., 143 2B, 125 HR, 422 RBI, .42 BB-K, .306 OBP, .447 SLG, .753 OPS, 93 OPS+

The
stats are obviously not very impressive to say the least, but when
healthy Crede is a fit as he provides power and great defense, which is
what the Twins are looking for. Surely the Twins are looking for power,
and would be willing to sacrifice OBP for homers at the bottom of the
order. Though, healthy is the term. Crede's back has hampered him the
past 2 seasons limiting him to just 146 games the past over that span. According to his Agent,
Scott Boras, Crede is ready to go and healthy after his minor surgery
in the offseason, and we have reason to believe so, or hope so. My
personal belief is that Crede has long had this, and now with 2
corrective surgeries, he has to be good to go.

And with
all of this, there are 2 more options out there: one being internal and
one being on the West Coast. There has been a lot of talk about moving
Michael Cuddyer back to 3rd once again, though the Twins have been
hesitant and quiet about that possibility. Cuddyer broke free at the
plate once he moved from the infield to the outfield and the Twins
obviously don't want one of their main power inputs going awry. Though
on the bright side, Spring Training is always a time for
expirementing... The other option, being Kevin Kouzmanoff of the
Padres. Kouz had shoulder surgery this offseason, though his numbers
might be comparable to Crede's, he hits in a much tougher park in San
Diego.
<strike>

</strike>It
all really depends what the Twins want from the position. Obviously,
power in the lower half of the order and great defense is always nice,
but do they also want to continue their success of high OBP and getting
on base, even if it sacrifices an extra 15 homers? I know the fans are
clamoring for some power, but this is something to consider. I'm all
for pursuing Crede and giving Morneau a better chance to carry this
team and see more pitches, but who knows what they could gain from a
full season with Kubel and Cuddyer.
<strike> </strike>

With only a week to go until pitchers and catchers report, a decision could be looming.

Twins have signed reliever Luis Ayala to a 1.3 million dollar deal that
could earn the former Nationals and Mets reliever 575K in incentives.
Ayala had a rough go of it this past season, when he was traded from
the Nats to the Mets August 17th. Though the bright side to signing
Ayala, is that with all the options in the Twins bullpen, his arm will
not be overused. Leading the Majors in appearances this past season,
Ayala found himself in trouble, accounting himself with an ERA high in
the 5's and being hit hard. Statistically in his career, he's shown to
be a tendency to be low on walks and strikeouts with a 2.91 BB-K ratio
and a 4.35 lgERA.

However, like I said before, Ayala's arm should resist abuse this
season, when the Twins will walk into camp with Boof Bonser, Jose
Mijares, Jesse Crain- all viable options for set up
man, respectively. Ayala shouldn't strike anybody as a set up man, as
he is low on gas and he induces plenty of ground balls.

To me, this comes off as a low risk-high reward signing. He's not the
Twins big offseason move we were hoping for (at least I don't hope so),
just a nice guy to add as a minor tweak to the roster, which is what
the Twins have been doing the whole offseason. I like the signing, a
guy who has been historically very good for the Nationals and a guy who
has the opportunity for success and a chance to compete for the set up
role with the Twins.

Apologies for all of the readers out there, though I may not have many,
I'd like to apologize for the lack of material since what seems like
November. I decided to get back around on the grind and discuss the
bullpen search the Twins are experiencing. There are several good
candidates, though they may be gone very quickly.

Russ Springer:

Though he is 41 years of age, Springer has proved he can have success
well past his prime years, and his last few years in St. Louis. Nothing
special about Springer, he can bring some decent heat, but is primarily
used as a right handed specialist- something the Twins would consider a
luxury. This, in my opinion, wouldn't be the ideal guy for the Twins to
go out of their way and sign. He's put up a spectacular ERA his past 2
years in St. Louis, but in 148 appearances those past 2 years, he's
only put 116.1 IP. For example, the highest amount of innings he threw
in a single appearance was 1.1, and I think the Twins want some
flexibility along with being able to have the luxury of an extended
outing from a reliever at times. Do the Twins really want that in a
bullpen signing? I'd figure with the Twins pursuit of 2 other free
agent pitchers, they're leaning in a different direction. Though I
think having Springer as one guy who can get you out of a small jam,
and a small signing by the Twins here wouldn't be bad. Though he is NOT
my guy if I had to choose one guy to sign.

Brandon Lyon:

A rumor was on its way this afternoon that Mr. Lyon was on the
verge of signing with Detroit. This is likely true, but I think it'd be
better to compare him with the other bullpen candidates. Lyon is a
converted closer coming out of the Arizona system. As a setup man he
was very effective, but this past season, he faltered midseason from
the closers role. I believe that because he doesn't have closer type
stuff, his whole pitching style and effectiveness was messed with when
Arizona designated him for the 9th inning. He pitches to contact and is
successful if he can get flyballs, and when you try to pitch like that
in the final inning, something is bound to go wrong. I thought Lyon was
the best option in terms of adding a solid guy in the later innings,
but now if he goes to Detroit, asking him to close games won't be very
easy to do, especially now entering one of Major League Baseballs
toughest hitting divisions. I don't expect him to be successful closing
games, but I suppose he chose the title of closer over setup man and
the ability to win immediately.

Eric Gagne:

Yes, the name comes off as alarming, but with Eric's strong 2008
finish, he might've established himself as a possible steal in the free
agent market. With a .93 ERA in his final 10 appearances Gagne was a
pretty solid bullpen option in the 2nd half. His stuff has declined in
terms of effectiveness from his days with Los Angeles and Texas, but I
think a rebound could be a good thing for Gagne to have in Minnesota.
He had a spectacular season in 2007 before a trade to the Red Sox, in
which everything just seemed to fall apart. This past season, he
continued to struggle, though he put up a very solid ERA+ and a
mediocre WHIP. I think now that Lyon is signed, and Springer isn't the
right handed fireballer the Twins quite wanted, Gagne, for cheap, is
the best option. Reports are that the Twins and Gagne's agent, the
infamous Scott Boras, are exchanging possible earnings and benefits of
a possible contract with Minnesota.

All 3 are very good pitchers, but with their skillset and options
limited, I'd like to see Eric Gagne as a Twin, if anybody, next season.
He's still got a nice fastball, and a devastating slider to use as his
out pitch.

On another note ...

The Twins are believed to now be engaging in talks with free agent
3rd baseman Joe Crede. A Twin killer in his own right, Crede nailed the
Twins this past season by batting .400 with 7 of his 17 home runs
against the Twins, and making several amazing defensive plays. You can
see why the Twins would want him, if he stays healthy (more on that in
a sec), he's good for about 25-30 homers and 90 RBI. Crede has a poor
OBP, but I'm sure the Twins, who obviously are looking for power,
wouldn't mind a power bat in the lower part of the order even if it
means sacrificing a higher batting average. Allegedly, a minor surgery
he had this offseason has cured the spinal tissue in this lower back,
something that playing on Metrodome turf wouldn't exactly help. He's in
Arizona and is expected to work out in front of Twins scouts several
weeks before spring training. I'd love this signing, it could
potentially give the Twins some pop at the bottom of the order as well
as provide a short term, effective solution at a position the Twins
have been looking for since Corey Koskie left the team via free agency.

Twins fans quivered in their snow boots at the THOUGHT of Nick leaving the Twins to play for anyone else.

*Sorry to all of those who specifially remember what you wore, where you were, and how you reacted, but it is necessary to relive the moment in order to add affect.*

To come back to reality for the remainder of the blog, the Twins DID resign Punto for 2 years, and an option in 2011, which could at least earn him 8.5 million. On top of that, Punto has already been named the starting shortstop for the 2009 Minnesota Twins.

In December.

That's correct folks, JJ Hardy, Yunel Escobar, or Jack Wilson is NOT the starting SS for the Twins, as I expected. But to get away from the rambling about how wrong and crushed we all are- let's evaluate the move.

The Twins get a shortstop in his early 30's, who can play anywhere and hit ... a little. Of course that's the problem we all have with Little Nicky Punto. After hitting for a homer, 22 RBI, and a .210 average, he rebounded pretty strongly (at least by his standards) by hitting 1 extra homer, 6 extra RBI, and 74 thousandths of a point added to his average. Pretty impressive huh? I guess it is to the Twins, those extra little dinks and dunks got him a couple extra mil in his pockets.

Gardy's favorite little guy got his stay, and I like the signing a lot actually. Yeah we had a couple of other options at that position: Tolbert was one, Harris being the other, but other than that the Twins couldn't do any better. The trade market was bare: the aforementioned JJ Hardy and Yunel Escobar were pretty much called safe and logically, the Pirates Jack Wilson wouldn't have been much better.

Nothing would've worked out better for us, and now we have the soft hitting, first-base-diving, "gamer" back on the roster.

Seems better suited in the offseason, does it not?

Much documented in the past weeks by Twins fans has been the bulging
zit on the teenage face of a preyearbook picture take, or the runt of
the litter: otherwise known as, the 4 outfielders syndrome. Four guys,
3 spots, what can you say? Someone will have to go, someone will stay,
and I can guarantee you, a bad choice will be made.

We're only days away from the Winter Meetings and a move has yet to be
made by the Twins ... besides those scintillating 40-man roster moves.
All I'm hearing from the front office is a replicate sound bite off of
the Peanuts: wah wah wah wah wah. This offseason has been full of talk
from Minnesota and action is yet to be taken. The opportunities are
running out it seems and there is no better time then now then to go
into Las Vegas with some idea what the heck you think you are doing.

So let's review shall we?

Just one season after being traded to the Twins, Delmon Young is
looking like a primary trading chip more and more everyday I look at
his name. The fact of the matter is that he is a young budding star
acquired for a role playing shortstop and a middle of the rotation
pitcher and the Twins are supposedly willing to trade him already? Even the manager has said Young is not in the preferred OF, bad PR move ... This
really does make me wonder who we hired when we let Bill Smith take
over the reigns. Terry Ryan was obviously a supreme talent evaluator
for us, but now this just looks stupid. I know the outfield is crowded
and all, but one year? The guy is only 23 years old and has only been
in the Majors 2 full seasons, and for some reason I guess we're ready
to give him up.

Though unloading Mr. Young isn't the only option, it seems to be the
only one the Twins are even considering. This man has done and said
everything right since that awful September day, but the Twins are
seriously considering trading valuable right-handed power to fill other
holes. I just don't understand.

Now if you were to ask me, I'd give you the normal Twins fan response- NO! But if the Twins get an offer they can't refuse for an elite productive shortstop, they might just have to make the deal. With Colorado and San Francisco being the primary suitors, I would be a big fan if we were to trade Young to Colorado for one of their young infielders- Barmes, Baker, Stewart. I'd honestly love to keep Young, but I think getting one of those guys could improve our team in so many ways by giving us another filled INF spot. But it's not up to me, and it's not up to any of us. All I ask is we keep it real and play the waiting game. Someone will be gone, we just have to find out who.

Baseball America released their version of each MLB teams Top 10
prospects this week and this year's picks don't seem to show many
surprises. After a successful 88 win 2008 season, the Twins bank on
just 2 prospects that might be able to help out at some point in 2009.
I'm kinda shocked that the 2 fireballing relievers down in the High
A/AA level Anthony Slama and Rob Delaney aren't on there however.
Nonetheless, a solid list that displays the next wave of Twins
prospects.

1. Aaron Hicks- The Twins' first selection of
the 2008 MLB Draft had a solid season down in the rookie leagues and I
expect solid seasons at every level. Hicks is a 5 tool stud athlete who
has power to the gaps and is still developing physically. Coming out of
Cali, Hicks was a part time pitcher who said he's committed to playing
a full-time outfield in the minors. Hopefully in the majors as well ...

2. Ben Revere-
Yet another speedy Twins outfielder. A lot of people questioned the
pick of him in the first round in 2007, as he wasn't expected to be
picked until several rounds later. At a generous 5'9", he hit a
successful .379 (Yes, I made sure no typos) down in low A ball. He's
rated as the Twins' fastest baserunner and the stats show it, with 1
more stolen base than RBI (44-43). He's a pesky, smart player, who
still has a lot of growing and learning to do.

3. Wilson Ramos-
Ramos is a solid defensive catcher who had a solid hitting season at
Fort Myers this past season. He's not expected to do much in the majors
and may be a stretch to say he'll make the majors with the Twins,
unless something were to happen to Joe Mauer (I knocked on wood guys,
it's OK). He's a solid guy behind the plate but not expected to hit
much at all as he rises levels.

4. Jose Mijares- He
made a solid september stint (say it 3 times fast) with the Twins this
past season only allowing only 1 run in 10 appearances, good for a 0.87
ERA. All of this after a devastating January car crash. He's out of
options for this coming season, but not to worry, he's also expected to
be a key contributor in the Twins late inning relief next season.

5. Danny Valencia- The
3rd baseman of the future is what he's been called in the minors as he
made a pretty successful jump from Fort Myers to New Britain halfway
between the Florida State League season. He hit a .311, 15 HR, 76 RBI
line combined at High A and AA ball this past season and he's expected
to be ready in one year. He can hit for power and he can field his
position very well, he's just gotta work on that strikeout rate!

6. Anthony Swarzak-
The young, talented righty had a tough time early in the season at AA
ball, but when he was moved up to AAA, he was seemingly dominant. In
comparison to his 5.67 AA ERA, he lowered that ERA to 1.80 in the next
half season in Rochester while winning all 5 of his decisions. If
anything were to happen to one of the other Twins young starters,
Swarzak looks like the guy who'd get a call to the bigs.

7. Shooter Hunt-
Shooter's got some stuff. Like. Seriously. He dominated early in
Elizabethton but struggled on the midseason transition to Beloit. But
that's reasonable, he was picked in the 2nd round just last year. He
had 34 strikeouts in 19 innings in the rookie leagues and 34 strikeouts
in 31 innings in A ball, but with an ERA that increased by nearly 5
whole runs. He's got the stuff to be an ace and I expect him to be one
day.

8. Kevin Mulvey- Another starter expected to
contribute somehow to the Big Club next year. After coming over from
the Mets in the Santana-Gomez trade, he had a solid year in Rochester
with a 3.77 ERA. Nothing incredibly special about him, just a solid
fastball-changeup-slider guy who gets outs.

9. Carlos Gutierrez-
He was picked questionably by the Twins in the first round last year,
and many people had to scratch their heads ... Well of course just
another strange draft pick by the Twins ... or so it seems at first.
Nobody ever said the guy wasn't good, but he was expected to be a 2nd
or 3rd round pick, but I guess the Twins didn't want a power hitting
infielder. He's got a good fastball and was very intimidating at the U
coming out of the 'pen as a closer.

10. Angel Morales- Morales
is just another toolsy Twins outfielder, but Angel brings a different
aspect to the Twins system- power. In 183 rookie league AB's, he hit 15
homers out of his 55 hits. Pretty impressive, but it is just the rookie
leagues. He's got power and a bit of speed to mix in his game. Let's
hope the power can continue for him.
What does a loyal Twins fan want for the Holidays? A 2009 Twins' throwback jersey? What about a World Championship? Well of course those things are nice but let's slow it down a bit and get the offseason rolling first.

For those Twins fans who savor every little nugget, or who wonder in amazement over a potential 2009 Twin, let's think about what we're looking at.

My thoughts are simple. Sign Casey Blake and make some type of move for a shortstop. The trade market is looking damaged for a player such as JJ Hardy or Yunel Escobar. Why would the Brewers risk creating a hole at such an important position like shortstop? We all know they're waiting for Alcides Escobar to develop into a full-time Major League shortstop and it may take another year, so why would they rush him and trade a young, powerful shortstop such as Hardy? It doesn't make sense on the Brewers part. None at all. I don't see them doing it, and Doug Melvin already stated Hardy isn't even on the market yet.

As for Escobar, I don't get why the Braves would trade him either. He's young, talented, and under control for 4 more seasons and they have a lack of depth at that position all at the same time. The guy is a flat out stud and while I'd take Hardy or Yunel with open arms, I don't see either team trading for them, unless the Twins have Jake Peavy's 'twin' brother. And for those of you thinking about trading Michael Cuddyer, stop. Personally, I would like to trade him as well, but I guarentee you no one wants to take him on. Even though he could produce in this lineup, no one wants a seasoned, injured outfielder for his contract. Plain and simple. Gonna be tough to dump him off to anyone, but imagine what he could do hitting behind Mauer and Morneau again ... Just sayin'.

Casey Blake is almost a foregone conclusion it seems like. We all know he wants to sign here and we all know we want him to sign here. Every Twins fan is filling him in his lineup card for next year and expecting the Twins to sign him for 2 or 3 years. The guy just was meant to be a Twin, so let's get that deal done, we all know it was meant to be.

As for shortstop, the trade market is bare, so it looks like we will have to turn to the free agent market. Orlando Cabrera might be a nice fit- but only for the right price. The man is not worthy of 10 million a year in my book, but I think he'd do a solid job here. The one achilies of that potential signing is that the Twins might not be willing to sacrifice their first round draft pick. But hey, you must give to receive, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to give up a first rounder for an average shortstop either in a potential world series year ... Well it couldn't be worse than Nick Punto ...

Anyways, I believe this Twins team could be the frontrunner next season in the AL if they fill up the gaps. Engineering a championship will take some effort from the front office and our players, but I'm not praying every night to my Twins alter for nothing I hope!
